Florida Golden Aster Ornament
Florida Golden Aster Ornament
A beautifully festive and unique gift for the plant lover
The Florida Golden Aster, Chrysopsis floridana, is a native wildflower found only in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Manatee, Highlands and Hardee counties. In 1986 it was put on the endangered species list as there was only one known cluster alive in Hillsborough county. Now nearly 4 decades later it has slowly spread and started to recover, bringing its bright burst of sunny petals and scrubby foliage to habitats like Weedon Island and Fort Desoto park.
These special ornaments are hand painted enamel on stained glass with brass bell adornments.
Each one is unique and one of a kind made my yours truly for this holiday season. They catch the light beautifully and will be a stunning addition to your tree or as a year round window charm.
Each bell shaped ornament comes in a decorative gift box with a card describing the Florida Golden Aster.
Sizing varies slightly due to the handmade nature of the ornament, but is about the size of a pop tart. There are four different pieces in this collection to select from, or get one of each! <3
As an artist and small business owner in 2024 it is easy to identify with this threatened flower. The Florida Golden Aster is only found in the Tampa Bay area and while it has been delisted from the endangered species list this year, it may be slightly premature as this flower is under continued threat from city expansion and poor agricultural practices. Bringing awareness to the struggle of a tiny flower may seem trivial, but it is part of a bigger picture. With awareness, compassion, and effort it is my belief that this little star can shine its light for many decades to come.
If you would like to read more about this flower and the efforts to revive its population here is a link to a Tampa Bay Times article from this year.
